Sportsmanship - SEA Games
Filipinos really don’t want to lose to any competition may it in politics or in sports. We used to hear that if a politician has lost in his or her bid for public works, he or she would claim to be scammed or cheated. I thought it was only in a politics until some sports official released a statement after the Philippines ended up in number six slot in the last South East Asean Games (SEA games) in Thailand. Some thought that if not for the bad decisions from some sports officials then maybe we were on the top spot by now.
We always assumed that this is true but hopefully sports officials in the country are telling this to clean up or to avoid the blame about the results or the outcome of the games.
I really missed those well known Filipino and Filipina sports figures like Lydia de Vega, Asia’s Sprint queen, Elma Muros in Athletics who made name not only in Asia but also in Olympics, Mikee Cojuangco in her equestrian apparel who also made name in the world, Mansueto Velasco in boxing and many others.
Hopefully in this coming 2009 SEA Games in Laos, sports officials will no longer blame the games on official bad calls for not winning gold medal. Hopefully a better compensation package will be prioritized instead of hiring international or foreigner coaches and trainers. Although they can help, I still believe in true Filipino talents.
