It’s just a few days of sleep till the opening of 2008 Beijing Olympics. This time, it has the theme “One World One Dream” . This Olympics is a multi-sport event participated by almost all of the countries around the world subdivided into summer and winter events. The summer and winter games are each held every four years (an Olympiad). Until 1992, they were both held in the same year. Since then, they have been separated by a two year gap.

The First Olympiads were held in Athens Greece from 06 April 1896
to 15 April 1896 and the last Olympics the XXVIII Olympiads were held in Athens Greece where it’s already marked its more than a hundred years from 13 August 2004
to 29 August 2004. But according to history, the original Olympic games were held and first recorded in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece, and were celebrated until AD 393. On 13 July 2001 at the 112th IOC Session in Moscow, Beijing was elected the Host City for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008. The vote followed in line with the recommendation of the IOC Evaluation Commission that “Beijing Games would leave a unique legacy to China and to sports. The Commission is confident that Beijing could organise an excellent game”.

The Olympics have always joined the people all over the world together in peace to respect universal moral principles. Where most of the countries all over the world send their athletes to compete and promote the Olympic spirit.

The XXVIX Olympiads in Beijing will officially open on August 8-24 2008 where they spent millions of dollars in preparation for this. They transform the ancient city into a modern one where China will showcase its new architectural design combined with new technology of almost all sports venue. They combined traditional and modern design. Like the Olympic stadium, they built where it was contextualized from the birds nest. Also known as the National Stadium or the “Bird’s Nest” for its architecture, that is scheduled for completion in March 2008.

In Beijing, China, government officials engaged architects worldwide in a design competition. They are Pritzker Prize-winning architects Herzog & de Meuron who collaborated with ArupSport and China Architecture Design & Research Group to win the competition. Contemporary Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei, is the Artistic Consultant for the design. The ground was broken on December 25, 2003, and construction started in March 2004, but was halted by the high construction cost in August 2004 and continued again. In January 2008. Concerns about construction working conditions arose when it was revealed that at least 10 workers had died during the stadium’s construction.

The stadium can seat as many as 91,000 spectators during the Olympics. The capacity will then be reduced to 80,000 after the games. It has replaced the original intended venue of the Guangdong Olympic Stadium. The stadium is 330 meters long by 220 metres wide, and is 69.2 metres tall. The stadium uses 258,000 square metres of space and has a usable area of 204,000 square metres. It was built with 36 km of unwrapped steel, with a combined weight of 45,000 tones. The stadium also has some 11,000 square metres of underground rooms with waterproof walls. The stadium will cost up to 3.5 billion Yuan (≈423 million USD).
